Atiku Abubakar Urges National Assembly to Investigate Secret Petrol Subsidy Allegations.
In a striking move, Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the National Assembly to investigate allegations of a secret petrol subsidy scheme under President Bola Tinubu's administration. This demand has sparked significant controversy and debate within political and public spheres.
Atiku's concerns were articulated in a statement released by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe. He accused the Federal Government of lacking transparency and accountability, urging them to take responsibility for their policies and their consequences. Atiku highlighted the discrepancy between Tinubu's public stance on the removal of petrol subsidies and the government's alleged covert actions.
In his statement, Atiku claimed that despite President Tinubu's public declaration on May 29, 2023, that "Subsidy is gone," the administration has been secretly disbursing trillions of naira on petrol subsidies. He pointed to a leaked document showing that the Federal Government spent N3.6 trillion on subsidies in 2023 and plans to spend N5.4 trillion in 2024.
"The Tinubu administration should be courageous enough to own its policies and outcomes with full chest and be responsible enough to be accountable for its actions to Nigerians," the statement read.
Atiku emphasized the importance of the National Assembly's role in investigating these allegations rather than focusing on what he described as trivial matters. He argued that the denial of the subsidy payments supports the notion that funds meant for the Federation Account, which should be shared with states and local governments, are being misappropriated without accountability.
"This denial lends credence that money meant for the Federation Account, which ought to be shared with states and local governments, is being diverted without any form of accountability whatsoever," Atiku stated. He called on the National Assembly to prioritize this investigation and fulfill its oversight responsibilities.
