Prof. Lilian Orogbu Empowers Over 200 Widows and Youths in Anambra State
Awka, Anambra State – In a significant move to uplift vulnerable community members and stimulate local economic growth, Prof. Lilian Orogbu, the House of Representatives member for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, has successfully empowered over 200 widows and youths in the region. The initiative provided essential skills and resources to help participants establish small-scale businesses.
The empowerment program, a collaborative effort between the Federal College of Horticulture, Norton Innovation Services Ltd, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, focused on equipping participants with practical business skills. This initiative aimed at addressing the economic challenges faced by these groups and promoting sustainable development within the community.
Held at St. Mathews Parish, Amawbia, the program followed an intensive training session at Ndi Ichie village hall, Umudioka, Awka, from June 25 to 28, 2024. During the training, participants learned how to start and manage sewing businesses and grinding machine enterprises, skills critical for economic self-sufficiency and community advancement.
Speaking at the event on Saturday, Prof. Orogbu emphasized the importance of investing in women and youth to drive sustainable development and alleviate poverty. She remarked, “We must invest in our most vulnerable community members to forge a brighter future for all. To the beneficiaries, seize this opportunity and utilize the provided resources effectively.”
Prof. Orogbu highlighted that the initiative, which began with 200 individuals, aims to mitigate the impact of ongoing economic challenges. She expressed optimism that the empowerment program would significantly benefit the participants and their broader communities, leading to the growth of small-scale businesses, improved family livelihoods, and thriving local economies.
Representatives of the beneficiaries, including Patience Anagor from Amanuke and Ejie Ikechukwu from Nise, expressed their gratitude to Prof. Orogbu for her timely intervention. Anagor noted, “Prof. Orogbu’s initiative is a shining example of community development, inspiring hope and positivity in Awka North and South.”
This empowerment initiative underscores Prof. Orogbu’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment and fostering economic growth through skills development and resource provision. As these newly empowered individuals embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, the community anticipates a positive ripple effect that will enhance economic stability and prosperity in the region.
