University of Ilorin Faces Budget Strain Due to Steep Electricity Tariff Hike

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), has voiced serious concerns over a significant hike in electricity tariffs by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, impacting the university's budget. In a message to staff and students, Egbewole revealed that the institution's monthly electricity bill had soared from N70 million to N230 million, deeming the situation "unsustainable."

He urged the university community to reassess their electricity usage and adopt more responsible consumption habits. The administration is negotiating for alternative power solutions, with new buildings incorporating provisions for such sources. Egbewole expressed gratitude for the resilience shown during recent disruptions and reassured the community of the administration's commitment to tackling these economic challenges.

The vice chancellor's message underscores the urgency for sustainable energy practices and fiscal responsibility amid rising costs.
