Warri-Itakpe Train Service Resumes Monday After Accident

Warri, Nigeria – The Warri-Itakpe train service is set to resume operations on Monday, following a temporary suspension due to an accident. This vital rail link, which connects the southern city of Warri with Itakpe in the central region, had been halted for repairs and safety assessments after the incident.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced the resumption, emphasizing that extensive inspections and maintenance work have been conducted to ensure passenger safety. The accident, which occurred last month, involved a derailment near the Kogi State section of the line. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though several passengers sustained minor injuries.

In a statement, the NRC Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, assured the public that all necessary measures have been implemented to prevent future occurrences. "We have thoroughly investigated the cause of the derailment and taken corrective actions. Our priority is the safety and comfort of our passengers," Okhiria stated.

The Warri-Itakpe rail line is a crucial part of Nigeria's transportation network, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the region. The line is particularly important for the economy, as it serves the steel and mining industries, providing a reliable means of transporting raw materials and finished products.

Passengers have expressed relief at the news of the service resumption. "I rely on this train for my weekly commute to Warri for business. The disruption was quite challenging, but I’m glad it’s back," said John Eze, a regular traveler on the route.

The NRC has also taken this opportunity to upgrade certain aspects of the service, including enhanced onboard facilities and improved scheduling to ensure timely departures and arrivals. As the train service resumes, the Corporation is optimistic that these improvements will enhance passenger experience and boost confidence in rail travel.
